The Wisdom of Sharing Our Experience in SCN 2017 Anthology

Once more my writing has been honored by inclusion in Story Circle Network’s anthology, Real Women Write: Sharing Our Stories, Sharing Our Lives. The topic of the 2017 anthology was “Difference.” My essay, which appears in the online version, is titled, “The Wisdom of Sharing Our Experience.”

My essay was inspired by a request from a cousin who lives at a distance and wanted to have regular contact with me through phone conversations. Because I care about our relationship and am aware that we have very different beliefs, I requested that we talk about our experiences versus our beliefs.

When hearing of my request to my cousin, Mark Nepo, one of my spiritual teachers, enthusiastically validated its wisdom. He asked for permission to write about it in his book, The Endless Practice. He later told me he shares this story widely when speaking to groups.

In our current contentious political climate, the hope is that by sharing our experience rather than our opinions, we might come to a better understanding of those who are different. The hope is that with this understanding, the polarization we currently experience will be reduced or eliminated.

I am pleased that SCN found my essay worthy of inclusion.
